Malaysia
Malaysia is the latest ‘big thing‘ if you’re heading East. And one of the brightest stars is the idyllic retreat of Langkawi.
A one hour flight from Kuala Lumpur takes you to this beautiful group of islands. Langkawi’s emerald green hills rise out of shimmering crystal waters and is known for majestic views, beaches and marine life.
Pulau Langkawi is the largest of the islands. Mainly a padi-growing region with many fishing villages, the islanders welcome visitors and today there is a good choice of hotels, restaurants, shops and two smashing golf courses.
The island is perfect for total relaxation or, for the more adventurous of us, there's a host of exciting things to see and do. We recommend an island cruise - the glass-bottom boats allow you to see lots of exotic fish and marine life, or a jungle trek to the legendary Seven Wells where cascading pools make for great fun and the tropical forest is an ideal picnic spot.
Kuala Lumpur is well worth visiting if you have not already had the occasion. There is always plenty to do in the Capital; you can visit the majestic Petronas twin towers and take in the city sights from the viewing gallery, shop ‘til you drop in the impressive mall, people-watch over a drink in the nearby Japanese gardens and browse the street markets and try some spicy noodles in Chinatown. Don’t try this all in one day as you have museums, parks and the restaurant and bar area of Bangsar to discover…
Malaysia is celebrating its 50th year of independence in 2007 so now is the time to visit! The Datai golf course is carved out of virgin jungle and is a joy to play. The variety of tricky uphill and downhill lies keeps you on your toes as do the water hazards and bunkers. The fairways are fairly narrow so unless your driver behaves, use your irons or you may be trekking into the jungle! And at the end of your round, have a go on the 19th hole... Straight into the Andaman Sea.
There is a second golf course located 20 miles away: Gunung Raya. This is welldesigned and worth the short taxi ride.
